As a youth, Bowditch overcame challenges and personal losses and initiated a program of self-education. The settings of this book are Salem, Massachusetts during the birth of the United States and the high seas, as Bowditch sailed to the Far East during an era of extreme risks and dramatic navigation. This unit contains 24 scripted literature lesson plans, an end-of-unit test, 9 beautiful coloring pages, a world map, graphic organizers, classroom vocabulary cards, a one-act play called “Sailing by the Book,” instructions for an Old Salem Harborfest, and 8 coordinating arts and crafts lesson plans, in which the children create a Seaman’s Log and map the night stars.
